If you take a stroll around Twitter these days, there’s one trend that you can’t help but laugh: Tropical Storm Karen. Funny and creative, the trending memes depict the Karen as the angry mom/customer crossing the Atlantic in search of the manager. While it’s okay to laugh at the ridiculousness, the stark reality is that the climate crisis is getting worse.

On September 23, 2019, climate activist Greta Thunberg delivered a searing speech at the United Nations Climate Summit about the current state of affairs. “People are suffering. People are dying, Entire ecosystems are collapsing,” she states. Storm after storm, hurricane after hurricane, these clear signs of global warming has had a large impact on many coastal cities around America and the Caribbean. The grim reality is that Tropical Storm Karen is just another natural disaster, another thing that will desensitize us more to these increasingly common phenomenons.

We have to do something now because simply acknowledging the existence of climate change is unacceptable. We need to have real discussions about how best to cut down emissions while also considering the economic impact on these plans. So let us all be like Karen and take our concerns to a higher authority.
