As any reader might have heard, Hurricane Dorian – the one that has made landfall in the U.S. – disseminated our Caribbean neighbor to the south: the Bahamas. According to the BBC, the confirmed death toll on the island is twenty people, 60,000 people are desperate for food aid and clean water, and some 13,000 properties in Bahama’s big cities have been severely damaged or destroyed.

While all that may sound bleak, there is hope for the island. Multiple volunteer groups and organizations have pledged their support to rebuild the Bahamas. Bstrong, an organization founded by The Real Housewives of New York star, Bethenny Frankel, has pledged to provide supplies and medical support to those who couldn’t evacuate the storm in time. Our previous volunteer hero, Jose Andreas, has mobilized his non-profit – World Central Kitchen – to help provide the necessary food supply for the victims of the storm. Last, but not least, a group called All Hands and Hearts are addressing the immediate and long-term needs of the community, listening to the residents and building better infrastructure to help develop a safer and lasting community.

The people in the United States have the luxury to weather the impacts of the storm; we have the infrastructure, the money, and the resources to rebuild and recover from Hurricane Dorian. But for our neighbors to the south, we must give them a helping hand and get them back on their feet because it is the right thing to do. If you feel like supporting any of the organizations that I mentioned, the link is down below. Check them out because their work is crucial to building a more connected and civilized world.
